SoundPainting™ ensemble members:

For rehearsals, please bring a notebook and pencil or pen in addition to your instrument. Most everything will be done by quick application and memory-building, but your own notes taken might quicken the pace. Please be on time as that aspect is limited during this concert. Please know that there is a SoundPainting™ workbook available for perusal in the library. By this time tomorrow, you’ll know most if not all of what you need to know to make pretty intense music in real-time without the aid of notation.

Please visit the SoundPainting ™ website.

SOUNDPAINTING is the live composing sign language created by New York composer Walter Thompson for musicians, dancers, actors, poets, and visual artists working in the medium of structured improvisation. At present the language comprises over 750 gestures that are signed by the composer/conductor indicating the type of improvisation desired of the performers. Direction of the composition is gained through the parameters of each set of signed gestures.
